***Striking for a People’s Green New Deal***

Sunday, December 8th | 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm
City College of San Francisco, Mission Campus

With Alex Morrison, Jennifer Marley, Dina Gilio-Whitaker, Marcia Ishii-Eiteman
Presented by:
Science for the People, Red Nation, Sunrise Movement,
and Pesticide Action Network

Public opinion for sweeping climate action shifted leftward over the last decade with mobilizations demanding social justice and economic solutions from the People’s Climate March and Standing Rock Water Protectors; new organizations like Idle No More, The Red Nation, and Labor Network for Sustainability; to the recent global actions of the Youth Climate Strike, Sunrise Movement, and Extinction Rebellion. Geoengineering and legislation won’t solve the climate crisis. We need a global transformation of society centered on agriculture, indigeneity, and socialism. It is in this context that Science for the People launched the People’s Green New Deal joined by The Red Nation’s Red Deal. These efforts are platforms for mass movements, protests, strikes, and action highlighting demands for demilitarization, end to fossil fuel extraction, indigenous liberation, abolition of borders, food and water, restoration of land, bodily autonomy, and people over profit.

Jennifer Marley is 23 years old and from the Pueblo of San Ildefonso. She has been organizing with the Red Nation for 4 years, and has held various leadership positions within the organization. She is currently a Ph.D. student in the American Studies department at The University of New Mexico.

Alex Morrison is 27 years old. Alex has been volunteer organizing with the Sunrise Movement Bay Area Hub since last December. His involvement has ranged from assisting in organizing direct actions as well as supporting various trainings locally and around the country. By day, he is a Climate Resilience Analyst for the City and County of San Francisco though all views expressed are his own.

Dina Gilio-Whitaker (Colville Confederated Tribes) is an independent consultant and educator on environmental justice and other Indigenous policy issues, and teaches American Indian Studies at California State University San Marcos. She recently published, As Long as Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice, from Colonization to Standing Rock. She also the coauthor, with Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, of “All the Real Indians Died Off” and 20 Other Myths About Native Americans.

Marcia Ishii-Eiteman is director of the Grassroots Science Program and a senior scientist at Pesticide Action Network (PAN). Her work includes supporting and building food sovereignty and agroecology movements in the U.S. and globally; challenging corporate power and influence over agriculture; and international policy advocacy for equitable and ecologically resilient food and farming systems. Before joining PAN in 1996, Marcia worked many years in Southeast Asia in farmer-led field schools and women’s health and literacy programs. She holds a PhD in Ecology and a BA in Gender and Politics.
